Have you ever fallen in love with a song? Ok, forget that, a whole soundtrack? I know I can’t be the only crazy wistful soul who has recreated a movie scene in my living room to a soundtrack that spoke to me, {You know who you are.}
I like to think we all play the soundtrack to our lives in our mind. As in life, we have different soundtracks. Sometimes we need to work, sometimes we need to relax, and sometimes we need to have fun. There are soundtracks for all of that. Sometimes, movies do it better than we could.
Here are my favorite movie soundtracks {and yes, most of them are pretty dated!}

1. Clueless
Not only is this a great movie, but the music is amazing. I never fail to feel like a teenager again when I hear “Kids in America“. Listening to “Supermodel” is fantastic when you’re getting dolled up for a date night, and you can’t help but dance a little to The Mighty Mighty Bosstones “Where’d You Go.”
2. Mr. Holland’s Opus
This movie is a sweet story with an equally sweet soundtrack. Travel through the sixties, seventies, and eighties with the sounds of John Lennon’s “Imagine”, Jackson Browne’s “The Pretender”, and Ray Charles’ “I Got A Woman”, just for starters. The final performance of Mr. Holland’s symphony is glorious as well.
3. Dumb and Dumber
Even if the zany antics of Lloyd and Harry aren’t your typical cinema style, the music is still worth a listen. (I personally love the movie as well.) I can’t say I would know some of these artists without the soundtrack introduction, but New Age Girl by Deadeye Dick is one of my favorite songs for a summer day.
4. Dirty Dancing
Ok, I probably don’t have to explain this one too much. Not only do you get to hear Patrick Swayze sing (and not badly!), but “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” has probably inspired more than a million attempts at “the lift” in living rooms all over.
5. Forrest Gump
Kind of like Mr. Holland’s Opus, what I love about this soundtrack is the awesome musical journey across the decades. You get great hits from Elvis Presley, Wilson Pickett, The Youngbloods, and more. I love any chance to hear Simon and Garfunkel’s Mrs. Robinson.
6. Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?
I can’t say I’m normally a bluegrass kind of girl, but this soundtrack is absolutely beautiful, and really a star of its own in this wonderfully weird film. If you’ve never seen this movie, I recommend a watch, and definitely enjoy how the music moves the story along, all period songs and juxtaposed beautifully to the film.
7. 10 Things I Hate About You
There’s really nothing I don’t love about this movie. While I’ll save the film stuff for another Movie Monday, the soundtrack deserves equal attention. I may be in my thirties now, but I still love listening to “Cruel to Be Kind” while driving, and “Even Angels Fall” is the perfect accompaniment to a wistful mood. Every song on this album is gold!
So many great movie soundtracks, perfect for every mood!! #moviemusic Share on X
