DIY Tricks For Salon-Worthy Hands and Nails

Get Crafty, BeautifulHello my name is Michelle Pino.  I hope to share some tips that will inspire you to treat yourself like royalty for a day, (or for fifteen minutes). You’ll find me spending most of my days at Skana Spa, a luxurious spa in upstate New York, where I work. I enjoy helping others, learning about beauty and fashion, healthy living and the occasional indulgence in the sweet treats I bake!

Everyone loves going to the nail salon for a day of pampering and relaxation. However, if you’re not the type who wants to invest in weekly manicures, never fear. You can still have hands and nails that are salon-worthy with some simple DIY tricks. These tips and tricks involve ingredients that many of us already have on hand and time to prepare and use.

Get Crafty, Beautifulstrengthen your nails

Those department store and salon nail strengthening treatments cost a bundle. What’s worse is that many of them require daily application, which means extra time that doesn’t come easy to most busy moms. Instead, take a package of unflavored gelatin and mix it into a small bowl of warm water. Soak your nails in the mixture for ten minutes, once a week, for strong nails that won’t peel or break.

Cuticle oils are another product that you may find to be quite overpriced. One of the most popular cuticle oils can be duplicated at home for pennies on the dollar. Mix equal parts almond oil, jojoba oil and vitamin E and store in a small jar or container. Rub into dry or peeling cuticles once a day for beautiful results.

Investing in a collection of name brand hand creams can become quite costly. Instead, take a dollop of whatever body lotion you have on hand and add a teaspoon of olive oil for an extra moisturizing boost. Rub into dry hands. For maximum results, put on a pair of cotton gloves or moisture mitts for 15 minutes after applying your enhanced lotion.

If you’re hands are chronically dry, implement this little tip into your shower routine. Take a small bit of body scrub and rub in your hands like lotion for three minutes. If you don’t have body scrub, remember: Any shower gel instantly becomes a body scrub if you add raw, whole sugar. With these simple tricks, you’ll be well on your way to having the softest hands and strongest nails you’ve ever had without dropping a fortune at the nail salon.
