It’s time for another Thrift Store Upcycle Challenge!

This month, I went slightly off my norm. I tend to gravitate towards to art or painted furniture, and I wasn’t really feeling any of it. Instead, I snagged an old Melissa and Doug wooden box. I knew exactly what I wanted it for : a remote control station to store the numerous remotes we have lying around.
I hate blonde wood in any form. This definitely required staining.
So, I’ve been touting this Java Gel Stain for years. No seriously, from my hutch to my stairs, I love this stuff. Since I always have a can available, I decided to use it for my wooden box upcycle.
I love this stain, it goes on so easily. I completed this project with one foam brush and one coat.
.
Next, I pulled out my Cricut to cut out a phrase I found on Pinterest.
I used Picmonkey to design my phrase, and went with a cut-friendly font. I used “Boiler Typeface”, a font I downloaded from Fontbundles. Once it was cut, I weeded out the excess vinyl for the phrase.
Once it was weeded out, I applied my transfer tape and applied it to my project.
Once I stripped back the transfer tape, I had a nice finish to my new remote control station.
With all the remotes in this house, I’m not sure I could have made a better decision for a craft!
Upcycle a toy box into a remote control station with this cute quote! #thriftstoreupcycle Share on X
This might be the best thrift upcycle I’ve done, and definitely the easiest!!
And now for more thrifty goodness!
Check out what my fellow upcyclers created below!
I’m always thinking those Melissa & Doug boxes should be useful 🙂 This is a great idea for them!
We had one for the longest time, simply because I was insistent that it could be made over. Crafty hoarding 🙂
Love this! I’m with you about the blonde wood, it just seems unfinished.
I seriously can’t stand it. Paint it all! Ha!
Great idea to wrangle up all of those remotes and controllers! Love the quote you used too
Thanks! It had a less family-friendly word in it, but I changed it to “bad times”, lol. I’m no stranger to cursing, but I know not everyone is like me. 🙂
What a fun project. I love the saying.
This is wonderful and I adore that funny quote. It’s perfect and so pretty too.
What a cute box and great saying. Love the stain color too.
I love the quote that you used! Very nice touch!

Cute and functional….love it.
Oh my gosh, Megan, what a great idea! I’m gonna need to make one of these ASAP. After our dog peed on (and ruined) one of our remotes, we constantly struggle to keep them out of her reach. A tray might be just the thing! Oh, and that quote is so great!
Oh my gosh that’s great! I love the saying and that little box to corral all the remotes we have laying around is perfect!
I have never heard that quote before & i just love it!! Great DIY project!
Very cute idea! I love the quote 🙂
What a fabulous idea! Our family needs at least three of these remote control boxes for our house.
Thanks so much for the DIY inspiration!
Having a place for remotes is must. It drives me crazy when I can’t find them, so I use a container. I love the tray you made and the quote is perfect.
Brilliant! I’ve used Melissa & Doug boxes for other things a few times too, they’re great aren’t they! I love your idea of the remote storage, because omg at my house we sooooo need that! Pinning!
What a great idea to keep the remotes in one place and stay organized. And very stylishly too.
