6 DIY Accessories to Brighten Your Home Before Spring
From the early sunsets and daytime greys of winter come the bright colors — and even brighter sun — of spring. As such, your home will likely need a bit of a refresh to reflect the joy of the new season. Fortunately, there are plenty of quick ways to brighten your space, and you can DIY, to boot. Here are six accessories that will make your home feel as cheerful as the season unfolding outside your front door.
1. Mason Jar Vases
There’s nothing more symbolic of spring than flowers — you just need the right place to showcase them. Creating a set of Mason Jar vases is an adorable way to present your bouquets. All you need is a set of jars, a different color of paint for each one, a brush and a piece of sandpaper with which you’ll distress your perfect paint job. In just a few hours, you’ll have DIY-ed your way to the perfect spring accessory for your kitchen counter, coffee table, nightstand… you name it.
2. Patterned Floor Pouf
This DIY project requires you to have a sewing machine, so you’re in luck if you have one in your crafting arsenal. That’s because a brightly colored or patterned floor pouf can add just the pop of color you need to make your home feel springier.
The supply list beyond a sewing machine is surprisingly small for this project. After buying three yards of fabric, coordinating thread, bean bag filling, needles and a zipper if you’d like to sew one on, you’ll be ready to craft. Don’t forget to compare the final cost of your pouf to ones on the market that can sell for upwards of $200 — your DIY undoubtedly saved you some dough.
3. Shiny New Backsplash
Countertops always get the attention when it comes to kitchen renovations, but they can be a costly item to update. Installing a new backsplash is one of the best ways to brighten your kitchen, and it’s likely to be a lot cheaper, too.
You can DIY your backsplash installation, too, and it’s a project that you can finish over the course of a single weekend. Just be sure the tiles you choose are reflective — think stainless steel or aluminum ceiling tiles — or otherwise shimmery so that they do bring more light to your kitchen.
4. Homemade Candles
From the soft glow they cast to the gentle scents they waft, candles can create ambiance in any room of your home. There’s only one problem: they can be super costly, especially if you’re a big fan of burning them day in and day out.
Making your own candles is neither difficult nor expensive, and you can customize the color and scent of each the exact type of springtime candle you want. After purchasing wax flakes and wicks at your local craft store, find the jars you want to use to house your candles. You’ll probably want to get a candle-specific measuring cup, too, so you don’t have to scrape the melted wax off of it each time you need to use it for cooking.
5. Spring-Inspired Wreath
During the holiday season, you might’ve had a wreath on your front door, but, chances are, the canvas has been blank since then. So, this spring, add some pizzazz to your entryway with a spring wreath you make yourself.
You can, of course, brainstorm your own flower-covered wreath for your front door and create something that’s one of a kind. If you need some guidance, try this super simple umbrella wreath: it’s literally an upside-down umbrella hung from your front door, which just so happens to be a perfect size and shape to hold spring tulips.
6. Wallpaper Coasters
Much like the Mason Jar vases we previously pitched, these little accessories will work in just about every room in your home. Of course, they’re not merely decorative accents, but rather a stylish way to protect your tabletops and surfaces from the dreaded ring of a sweating beverage.
Creating your own set of coasters will start with the perfect palette of colored wallpaper. Local decorating stores likely have samples you can take home to use for your project: just make sure the swatches you choose have similar colors to tie your coaster set together. On top of that, you’ll need tiles, felt to cover the bottoms and waterproof adhesive that’ll adhere your paper to the tops of your coasters.
Let the Light In
The above DIY projects will bring in that brightness that comes with spring each year. Whether you infuse your home with cheerful colors, actual light or a combination of both, you’ll find that a little bit goes a long way. In just a few hours — and after finishing just a few DIY accessories — you’ll be living in a space that’s just as ready for spring as you are.
