I find it safe to point out that the holidays are essentially here!! I love this time of year, the decorating, the food, the festivities. . . and, believe it or not, the cleaning. No, seriously. Before you go thinking I need to be committed for craziness, just hear me out.
We all know that holidays come with their fair share of messes. Between baking, cooking large family meals, dragging trees and boughs and wreaths into the house, and just the general craziness of having friends and family around, the house can get a bit overwhelming to keep up with.
Now, I am an oddity in that I’ve always enjoyed cleaning. There’s something relaxing about the ritual of removing dirt and grime from your life. I just find a function better in a clean, organized space.
So Here Are My Tips for How to Enjoy Cleaning Your Home!
Make Sure You Have Music
Everything is better with music on, so this is all about what you enjoy. Maybe it’s rock, maybe it’s classical, maybe it’s country. . . the more upbeat, the better! Me, I love showtunes. . . and I even have a playlist entitled “Dancing Around the House”. 🙂 You just can’t feel burdened or down when your toes are tappin’!
Create an uplifting atmosphere
I like to make it “an event” when I have my big cleaning days. The music, obviously, but also I like it to be as light and bright as possible to create a positive atmosphere to clean in. One way you can do this is to diffuse light aromatics, such as lemon or orange or other citrus scents. I like using essential oils, but candles or wax melts would work too!
Get the Family Involved
Depending on the age of your kids, they can be a big help on a cleaning day! My kids are 2 and 6, so I let the little one loose with a wet cloth on the window sills and the big one gets the honor of using the steam mop. It’s great to make a game out of who can get all the toys picked up the fastest! We also have dance parties with the brooms and rock out to kid soundtracks to keep it fun – and sneak in some exercise!
Use the Best Products to Get it Done Faster and Easier
After those big holiday meal preps, you can be left with plenty of nasty dishes and the desire to simply let them sit while you go relax. . . but instead, you can easily just get them cleaned up and put away and then the next morning you won’t be confronted with a mess after all your hard work.
For big tough messes, I like to use these Scotch-Brite® Scrubbing Dish Cloth packs : The Dish Cloth. Reinvented. These are a new product, but they do an amazing job! Check out this mess left from some of our own holiday meal prep. . .
Yuck!!! The dishwasher was already full, so these huge pots and pans were destined to litter my sink unless I just knuckled down and got them done. Rather than spend an hour scrubbing, got these all done in 20 minutes using the Scotch-Brite® Scrubbing Dish Cloths!
Sparkling! The scrubbing dots on the one side of the dish cloth allow you to take on tough messes in the sink and across a variety of surfaces. I love using them to wipe down the breakfast crumbs each morning as well. It’s so easy to keep these on hand as well, since The Scotch-Brite® Scrubbing Dish Cloth is fully washable, reusable and sturdy.
