This pin from Twelve on Main is what inspired me to make my own Sharpie pillow.

She used straight pins and cut out letters for her stencil, but I just went my normal route and used vinyl.

To Make Your Own DIY Sharpie Pillow, You Will Need:

  • Pillow, or pillow cover
  • Sharpie marker
  • Vinyl or letter cut outs for stencil

I already had this plain pillow, so I decided to just draw directly on it. I got it cheap so it didn’t bother me much if I screwed it up, and I figured I could always cover it. It’s obviously a bit trickier to write directly on a stuffed pillow as opposed to a cover, but patience and care go a long way. I also laid the pillow under a board and weighted it with books to flatten it as much as possible first.

First thing that I did was to create my design in Picmonkey.   I used the BODONI XT font included in Picmonkey for “Let’s” and “Home”, and Ilana Bloom font that I got during a free deal at Fontbundles.net for “stay”.

After I had my design on a transparent background, I uploaded it to my Cricut Design Space to trace and cut. I grabbed a sheet of vinyl and cut it out for a stencil.

Next I laid the stencil on my pillow and carefully traced the letters in black sharpie. This was the most time consuming portion by far.

Once I had my outline, I grabbed a fat black Sharpie and started filling in my letters.

Okay, this is seriously awesome! I love how vibrant the Sharpie is. Also, how smart are you, tracing the words and letters as your stencil instead of trying to create an inverse to fill? I love it!

You know, I originally thought about doing it that way, but I was like, I will DEFINITELY mess up laying out the inverse! So I went the opposite way, lol. Thanks for the compliments!

That saying is perfect for our house to. It’s on my list of signs to make. This is an awesome way to make a pillow. Your pillow looks fantastic! Great idea to use Picmonkey & then upload into design space.

Great way to personalize a plain pillow! My biggest takeaway was that you can upload a design from PicMonkey into Cricut Creative Space! I never thought to do that, but my mind is already churning with ideas. : )

I’ve done it on several projects! I find it easier to design in Picmonkey, especially with fonts. πŸ™‚

That is so adorable! Once it dried, did it still have that Sharpie smell? Pinned.

The pillow came out great. I like that it’s easy to do and I think most people will be able to create a Sharpie pillow, even without a cut machine.

For once, something I love so much WAS easy! HA! And yeah, you don’t HAVE to have a cutting machine to make one!

The saying on your pillow is my motto lately! Did you use a regular sharpie or one of those fabric sharpies?

I used a regular sharpie! I used a normal one for the outline, then a fat one to fill in. I don’t think I knew about fabric sharpies! I haven’t seen any bleeding, but then this is a throw pillow so it’s not like I really wash it. For a different craft, maybe fabric sharpies would be better?
