Summer means longer days, warmer evenings, and more excuses to take the party outside. What could be better than spending time outdoors surrounded by friends and family? Birthday bash? BBQ? Just craving a reason to hang out in the backyard with snacks and your people?
–> I’ve actually got all of these planned already for this summer! We’ve got at least one summer birthday, a family reunion, and regular BBQs in the backyard to soak up as much of the Chicago summer as possible!
If you’re the same, let’s make your outdoor space feel like it’s ready to host something worth remembering, without turning it into a pressure cooker. (Giggle.)
Here’s how to clean it up, cozy it up, and DIY it into party magic.

Step 1: Get Your Garden or Backyard Party-Ready
Before we get crafty, let’s lay the groundwork.

Clear the Chaos
Pick up stray toys, tackle the weeds, and sweep the patio like you’re expecting company (because you are). Remove any debris, leaves, and dry branches that may have accumulated since your last event. Check the condition of the garden paths: if they are covered in dirt or moss, they should be cleaned or resurfaced. A little bit of elbow grease goes a long way toward setting the stage for a great party!
Check the Structures
Your fence, garden gate, or pergola might not scream “decor,” but trust me, they’re still part of the vibe.
- Slap a fresh coat of paint on that garden door or pop some string lights around it. Instant upgrade!
- Clean porch or gazebo windows and drop a plant nearby for basically free ambiance.
- Got a wobbly deck board or sad old door? It might be time for a refresh. If they need to be repaired or updated (and you’ve got time before the event), call in the experts – New windows and doors will beautify the space and make it more comfortable for the party – plus they’re practical all year round. (I speak knowingly, having replaced all our windows last year.)
Set the Scene
Make the layout work for your guests. Think: cozy clusters of chairs, picnic blankets, or benches. Don’t forget the bug protection – plenty of citronella candles, bug spray, fairy godmother spells, whatever works.
If you’re rolling out a drink station or snack table, plan it now so you’re not scrambling later (ask me how I know).

Step 2: Add DIY Charm & Personal Flair
Now for the fun part. You don’t need to buy out the home decor aisle – your craft bin and a little imagination are more than enough.
Let There Be Light
String lights are a backyard party’s BFF. Drape them along the fence, the pergola, or between trees for that “golden hour all night” glow.

Want to get crafty?
Decorate glass jars with twine, paint, or washi tape and pop in LED candles. Boom – DIY lanterns. You can also try these DIY Ping Pong Lights!
Get Plant-y With It
Upcycle jars, tin cans, or even old teapots into hanging planters. Give them a paint job or let the rustic charm shine. Hang them from trees, rafters, or the back of chairs. Bonus points if they’re near doorways or windows for that extra “wow” moment.
Dress the Table Like It’s the Guest of Honor
Mix up the napkins, play with colors, and sprinkle some greens or wildflowers down the middle. Theme it up if you like – picnic plaid, pastel romance, or “whatever’s clean but still cute.” You can also try out my DIY outdoor party pack idea, especially for repeat hosting!

Craft From What You’ve Got
Scrap wood = rustic signs.
Fabric remnants = bunting.
Painted rocks = drink labels or seat markers.
Use what’s in your stash, and your guests will be too impressed by your creativity to notice you didn’t drop $300 at the party store.

Step 3: Celebrate the Space You Already Have
You don’t need a garden straight out of a magazine. You need a clean-ish yard, a few comfy places to sit, and a little DIY sparkle (minus the actual glitter, because…no).
The best garden parties aren’t the fanciest—they’re the ones where people feel welcome, relaxed, and a little inspired.
So turn on your favorite playlist, pull out the craft box, and get ready to turn your backyard into the kind of place where memories are made.
