If you love the movie While You Were Sleeping, then you are in the right place!

On the last (or fourth) Monday of each month, a group of bloggers participate in a #MovieMondayChallenge, hosted by C’mon Get Crafty! We decide on a topic, genre, or specific movie to use for inspiration and everyone gets free reign to create something wonderful!

This month’s challenge was. . . . MOVIES ABOUT FAMILY! Everyone was allowed to choose their own favorite film so long as it was inspired by the challenge word.

This movie was a no-brainer for me – constant banter and talking over one another or arguing about mundane trivia points is the exact way my family is. Elsie (played perfectly by Glynis Johns)  is my late great Aunt B in so many ways. Peter Boyle, Micole Mercurio, and Jack Warden play the stellar supporting cast and if you don’t want to join the Callahan family after their first scene, you’re missing out! Plus its set (and actually filmed!) in Chicago! Set during winter, with all the icy glory and city living realities Chicagoans know so well. . .

If you have never seen this movie, it is an excellent rom com for Christmas. Young, sweet Sandra Bullock plays Lucy, an orphaned Chicago Transit employee who saves the life of her secret crush one day on the “L”. Elevated trains for any non-chicagoans, 😉 While Peter (played by hunky Peter Gallagher) is comatose, a misunderstanding thrusts Lucy into the bosom of Peter’s whole family who believe she is Peter’s fiancèe. Cue Peter’s cute brother (Bill Pullman) and a mess gets messier, especially when Peter comes to and (rightly so) has no idea who Lucy is.

While the plot is hokey and trite in theory, the movie is actually heartwarming, witty, and overall adorable. It also has some of the best quotes ever!

I speak fluent movie quotes, as I like to brag, so whenever I can do a craft that incorporates them, I’m that much more excited to get started! I first jotted down the quotes that came immediately to mind for this film, and then realized that they all basically came out of the big family scenes where everyone is talking over each other and being. . . well, like a big loving but quirky family!

Seeing as While You Were Sleeping is set around the Christmas holiday and focuses very much on family relationships, I started thinking about how my family interacts during holidays. My assumption is that many more families are very similar to mine in that we all congregate – in the kitchen! How fun would it be to make some cute kitchen towels for holiday decor featuring my favorite quotes??

Supplies Needed

HTV aka Heat Transfer Vinyl (I used Siser Easyweed HTV for the first time in my life and oh mylanta am I in love!!!!)

Kitchen towels

Iron (or, if Santa is watching, maybe a Cricut Easypress??)

Parchment Paper

Cricut Explore

Downloaded designs, or access to Picmonkey to create your own

I picked up some kitchen towel packs that I thought could benefit from a little design, but also were neutral enough to work season to season. I used Picmonkey to create my designs by utilizing their BEBAS and Coffee Break fonts on a transparent background. The added designs came from my Bergamot Ornaments font. Next I uploaded my png file designs to Cricut Design Space and resized to fit on my kitchen towels.

When using HTV, you need to make sure to reverse, or mirror, your design so that it will transfer correctly to your surface. My particular designs required a LOT of weeding, so . . . that was fun.

Once the designs were fully weeded, I set the iron to the non-steam cotton setting and applied it to my design on the towel.

Cover the design with parchment paper and hold the iron over it for about ten seconds or so. Peel back the clear backing and let it cool. Then enjoy your new kitchen towels!

I absolutely love the idea of doing my own custom towels and I love these inspired quotes from the movie. This makes me want a Cricut.
