Upcycled Picture Frames {Monthly Crafty Destash}

Every month a group of bloggers are challenged by me to create a new craft or project from their own stash of goodies! Check out some awesome creations you might be able to make from your own stash! #CraftRoomDestashChallenge

I ran out of room to hang or display all the picture frames I'd been hoarding, so I decided to use the #CraftRoomDestashChallenge to upcycle them into something new!

So, you’ll see this again in my #CraftRoomChallenge posts as well, but this is literally the stack of picture frames just chilling on a shelf in my craft room. I bought a bunch of these matching frames to use for my son’s Disneyland themed first birthday party, but I don’t have room to display them anywhere. I had a wild idea to build a planter style box out of them. I’ve seen Pinterest links to making lanterns and such things out of frames, but I wanted to try something a little different.

I collected the frames and laid out a grid plan.  My idea was for a long skinny box, but I actually only had 8 frames. I could have sworn it was more!

I also pulled a long piece of cardboard from my stash, which I used for the bottom of my box. I hot glued three frames together for each side, saving one frame each for the ends. I pulled out the glass and spray painted them metallic. My original idea was a sort of over all galvanized metal looking box.

So here is a close up of me spray painting the glass on my backyard stoop. I accidentally spray painted the stoop. I’m sure my hubby will yell, but in my defense, it is ZERO EFFING DEGREES OUTSIDE. He should just be happy I didn’t say eff it and spray paint inside the house!

SERIOUSLY BITTERLY COLD.

After a few coats, I put the glass back into the frames and finished gluing the box together.

I did originally intend to spray paint the frames themselves, but seriously….too freaking cold!! So this upcycled picture frame box took a much more modern look than originally planned.

    What a fascinating idea. I think it looks good with the black frames.

    What a fun upcycle! I thought I was the only one who had a collection of picture frames sitting waiting to be used. 🙂

    Very clever idea. And we all have a ton of frames.

    I like this little repurposing project and I think we acidentially spray painted something we weren’t supposed to spray paint at the same time, lol. I sprayed inside the house (I know, I know)and the wooden floor in my hall might or might not have a Little White coating now…woops

    I don’t blame you for not painting the frames, too. On the upside, it looks great on your mantle!

    These upcycled frames are looking so creative. The spray painting might add some more shine, but these are also looking fabulous.
