I was partnered up with someone who participates in a much different version of the holidays than I do, in that they celebrate Yule, or the winter solstice. She has a lovely little summary, sharing that the winter solstice is a celebration of the halfway point where nights start getting shorter and days start getting longer. There is a celebration of the sun’s rebirth.

 

 

Once I knew my new friend’s tradition, I got to work. I still had a few wood discs from previous crafty buys, plus twine and glue, and I thought they would make a pretty little rustic wood tree ornament.

Supplies You Need to Make This Winter Solstice Wood Tree Ornament

• Two small thin wooden discs
• Acrylic craft paint
• Thin paintbrushes
• Glitter or glitter paint
• Twine
• Hot glue gun

 

 

 

I wanted to give sort of a stained wood look to the discs, so I dry brushed them first with brown acrylic paint. Once they were try, I stenciled on a design to each one – a snowflake for winter, and a sun for the solstice. You could draw them freehand if you have a talent for it, but I used a cheap plastic stencils from my stash that happened to have pretty designs of suns and snowflakes.

 

Once you have traced your design, use a thin tipped paintbrush to fill it in with acrylic paint.

 

 

There just wasn’t enough pizazz for me. I wanted to honor the rustic simplicity I felt would go well with a winter solstice tradition, but I certainly didn’t want to phone it in either. I dug into my drawers until I came up with yellow and silver glitter paint bottles. Perfect!

 

 

A few dabs of silver glitter paint on the snowflake and a full fill of the sun with yellow glitter paint made a world of difference to me!  I used clear Gorilla glue to secure the discs together, snowflake on one side and sun on the other. Then I used hot glue to secure a length of twine around the outer edges, looping the end to make the ornament hook and fastening it with more hot glue.

 

 

 

For a fairly simple craft, I felt like this winter solstice ornament turned out quite pretty! I hope my new friend likes it when it arrives! We live in different countries, so the mail takes a bit longer. I can’t wait to share the ornament she sent me when I get it!
