Bedrooms deserve stylistic upgrades and personal touches as much as any room in the house. Here are a few DIY ways to give your bedroom extra charm!
Many people overlook decorating their bedrooms because they’re usually out of sight for guests. But bedrooms offer plenty of opportunities to add personal touches and take decorating risks! With some DIY diligence and know-how, you can transform a bedroom from a place to sleep into a place to live. Here are a few DIY projects to upgrade your bedroom décor and infuse it with color, style, and inspiration.
Wall Art With a Personal Touch
Framing prints and posters is nice (and expensive, let’s be honest!), but you can add more personality by making the frames part of the art. Thrift stores are great sources of unique and affordable frames. Take them into your craft room and let your imagination run wild. Stripping or refinishing the frames with paint or stain adds new color and life. Get creative with glue and affix elements like seashells, nut shells, pieces of metal, and mechanical parts to the frames. Consider repainting frames with eye-catching colors like gold, silver, or any hue that stands out.
Another option, and one of my personal favorite things to do, especially on a whim, is grab the cheap wall art that sits in every home goods store with basic expressions on it, like “Live, Laugh, Love” or “It’s Wine O’Clock”. Not knocking anyone who has these into their home, just saying they are EVERYWHERE, and ready for you to re-purpose! Like I did with my quick Clearance to Wall Art project, using just some spray paint and vinyl!
Refresh Old Furniture
Old, outdated furniture can get a second or third wind with a new coat of paint. Clean it thoroughly, then sand it to remove the old finish. Investing in high-quality paint keeps the DIY upgrade looking polished and professional. Think of the motif you’re going for in your bedroom. If you’re aiming to create a luxurious and relaxing bedroom oasis, keep the colors subtle and calming. Chalk paint gives furniture a vintage, matte look, for instance. Add extra decorative touches like knobs and fittings for extra appeal.
I’ve made over so many thrifted furniture pieces that I still love in my home! I’m also always intrigued by the dozens upon dozens of IKEA furniture hacks and other makeovers on social media.
DIY Headboard
A headboard might seem antiquated, but it’s an excellent canvas for DIY ideas. Buying or finding a wooden headboard or constructing one from reclaimed wood provides the opportunity to sand it down and stain it to match your bedroom’s décor. Go rustic and leave it bare, or paint it with a mural that you’ll love waking up to every morning. A large piece of plywood can also serve as a headboard. Attach fabric with a stapler, keeping the staples out of sight by fastening them to the backside while leaving the front clean and smooth.
I’ve shared a few times the first DIY headboard I ever tried, by re-purposing some old bi-fold closet doors. I haven’t been as successful in my attempts at an upholstered headboard, but try, try again, right??
Pillow Covers
Even if you can’t sew, you can still create lovely pillow covers with pretty and intriguing fabric and adhesive tape. Choose colors that complement your bedroom’s palette and your personal taste. Personalize designs with fabric paint and iron-on transfers. These new pillowcases might not be great for a pillow fight, but they’ll look fantastic on your bed!
If you didn’t know by now, one crafty tool that I DO NOT OWN is a sewing machine. I would totally get one, and it would likely take me six months to a year to learn to use, largely because I would be afraid to try for a while. I have some kind of a mental block again sewing projects I’m pretty sure. But you don’t even have to sew to make a fun pillow! Check out my DIY Sharpie Pillow tutorial link below!
These are just a few DIY projects to upgrade your bedroom décor. Be daring and experiment with interior decorating in your bedroom!
