Have you ever had a thrifty find that you were just ECSTATIC about? Even a simple one?
I did!
I was in need of a bedside table for J’s room. Mostly since we needed a lamp nearer to his bed. (Our new house has ZERO ceiling lights in the bedrooms.)
Story time at bedtime was straining Mommy’s poor eyes, so I went looking for a nightstand. I found this little gem on a local swap site, bookoo.com.
Perfect! Time for a table makeover!
I got to sanding. WE ALL KNOW I HATE SANDING.
At least I could do it on the porch and watch J ride his bike. Small victories.
Now, when we lived with my mom during our house-hunt, we gave J a great Cars themed room. J still loves his Cars, don’t get me wrong, but it felt like time for a change. He’s developed a real love of the Marvel Avengers, (Mommy doesn’t mind Thor and Iron Man herself!) so I thought that would be a good idea for the table. For the room itself, I’m actually bucking convention and going with a multi-theme! More to come on that later…
Anyway, I decided to go superhero for this table. Red and blue are going to play major colors in J’s new bedroom, so I stocked up on some Sherwin Williams paint.
Hint! Small project like this, I got the sample size paints for $6 each!
They aren’t the superior quality, but they do a fine job on this kind of project, and are cost-effective! I bought STOP RED and REVEL BLUE for this project.
For this table, I wanted to get a little fancy with our superhero theme. I went to Etsy in search of some digital art I could tweak, and found some gems at Clipartopia on Etsy. I used her cute little supers and Picmonkey to make a fun tabletop background. Update – I have fallen prey to the wonder that is CANVA, and do most of my editing and designs there now – no shame on Picmonkey, but Canva definitely has more bang for the buck IMO!
Clipartopia sold me everyone I needed for J: Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Spiderman, Batman, and Superman.
I REALIZE I HAVE A DC/MARVEL CROSSOVER.
HE’S FOUR.
(though my OCD hurt.)
I needed to create a background image for the table. I started working in Picmonkey on each character. Since I’m ever so generous, here are the backgrounds I created. Free. For you. {Wait for applause}
{continue waiting}
The Spiderman background is NOT mine. I found it online, but in my haste, I forgot to note the site. I tried looking for it again to give credit, but I can’t find it now. 🙁
Not gonna lie ( or steal credit, which is a totally horrible thing to do) but I made the DC backgrounds using the Batman and Superman logos and Photoshop. I used a tiling process I found here on The Coffee Shop Blog.
I added Clipartopia‘s characters, and made one long image for the table:
Of course, I had to be able to print it, so I had to clip it and overlap. Prints perfectly on 8×10 full page print settings. I used sticker paper to help with the adhesion.

Out comes the Modge Podge!!
Anyone else freak out about wrinkles? Don’t worry. With Modge Podge, just give it some time, and you can work out the wrinkles with your fingers, or a hard edge like a credit card.
UPDATE: If you Modge your surface and immediately lay down your design, you can avoid wrinkles all together! Just be sure to smooth it out as you lay it, but that’s the new trick I learned!
Voila!
It is incredibly narcissistic to admit, but I am IN LOVE with this table.
J was pretty excited about it, and the Hulk Piggy Bank I made for him just sealed the deal.
