The summer has hit Chicago with a humid hammer, and it is crazy here! Despite all the humidity, I still like to plan summer activities with my boys. We are spending nearly every weekend at the pool, but there are other ways to fit in family time. Time for a staycation!
I have a hard time unplugging. Whether blogging or budgeting or mindlessly scrolling social media, it is hard to let go of the glow of the internet. I’m making it a point to unplug whenever I can and enjoy the moments available with my boys. An easy outing like a staycation picnic is a great way to spend family time in the summer!
This hot and cold travel bag is awesome for planning a picnic and saving $$! There are two compartments so that you can transport hot and cold meals together for a perfect family outing. By making food at home and taking it with us, we are able keep our outing budget friendly.
Now, there are plenty of great places to take a picnic, but my family is lucky. We have a family farm that has existed for over 100 years where we love to do our staycation trips. The house is very old and not always fun to cook in, so packing a picnic at our house before heading out saves us lots of headaches.
We have over forty acres of timber and land, and it’s a wonderful respite from our everyday lives. I love that my boys get to spend so much time where I myself spent my childhood.

Have a fun staycation picnic this summer! #ad #summer Share on XFor our picnic we packed some delicious Paulina sausages in buns, wrapped in tin foil to keep warm. We added in homemade macaroni salad, fruit, potato salad, and snacking veggies. Plenty of room left for condiments as well!
I plan impromptu picnics like this with friends and family. I just email them a week or so ahead of time and have them meet my husband and me at the park. I take a vinyl tablecloth and have bandanas for napkins with the silver tucked inside and I use denim pockets from old jeans to hold them. I take fried chicken, cole slaw, chips, watermelon, etc. and we take wet wipes and a trash bag with us. Simple and fun.
I love this concept, and all your ideas! The bandannas and denim pockets are brilliant!
