When the seasons change from summer to fall, everything starts to look different. Trees sport stunning colors and people shed their warm-weather attire for snuggly sweaters. Even houses are ready for a seasonal refresh. Stores put out fall merchandise to give people ideas for how they want their homes to look, but you don’t need to buy new things to get into the fall spirit.
There are lots of ways to decorate your home for fall. You probably have decorations left over from last year that you’d like to reuse, but they might be looking old or worn from multiple uses. Thankfully, you can give your home a fall makeover without having to break your budget.
Check out the list below for some fall crafts that make decorating for autumn easy. People who aren’t used to crafting all the way to people who craft for a living will love these projects. Spend an afternoon creating these and your home will be ready to welcome fall in no time.
Pumpkin Mason Jars
Pumpkins are great, especially for Halloween, but if you get them early in the season, they won’t last too long. That’s why you should grab some paint and a brush and sit down to decorate mason jars.
Mason jars always have a creative vibe, especially when they’re used in a craft. Pick out orange, yellow and red paint and cover the outside of your jars with whichever shades you like. Top with cut-out leaves or nestle in a short garland for a table topper.
Fall Leaf Garland
Garlands are gorgeous to use as decorations. They bring in the feeling of plant life without needing anyone to have a green thumb. They can even be designed specifically for the seasons, and fall is no different.
You can make a leaf garland for fall with almost any material. If you live in an area where you know you’ll be raking up piles of leaves soon, save some in a bag or basket to bring inside. You can string them together with fishing wire or any other kind of string and hang them in your home. Collect leaves of different colors to make your garland pop.
Festive Acorns
Acorns are another one of those staple fall items. When you see them on the ground or around stores, you know it can’t be any other time of the year but fall. You can use them as decoration for your home, but be careful to keep them out of reach of children or pets. They can be a choking hazard.
All you have to do to have festive acorns around your home is find some — look around your yard or in craft stores — and then paint them. You can paint in festive colors, add sparkles or decorate with whatever makes you think of fall. Sprinkle them between pumpkin spice candles or table toppers once they’ve dried.
Rustic Pumpkins
Ever wanted a reason to learn how to knit? You can knit your own pumpkins to bring the season into your home and make everything feel warm and cozy. Anything knitted will fit right into your fall decorating. Place some on porch tables or bookshelves to wrap autumn into your home. Once they’re set up, you won’t be able to resist snuggling under a blanket with a cup of hot tea.
Fallen Leaf Mobile
Many people aim to lead a sustainable lifestyle, which means you probably don’t want to waste anything you don’t have to. Before you throw leftover leaves from your yard into a compost bin, think about making them into a mobile instead.
Depending on how creative you want to get, you may only need a few supplies. You can spray-paint the leaves autumn colors if they’re all brown or green, and then use string to tie them up. You can hang them from a tree branch, a stick from your yard or in a circle on your porch like a wind chime. When the breeze blows the right way, you’ll hear them gently rocking into each other and enjoy the sound of fallen leaves.
Seasonal Bookmark
Bookmarks always seem to go missing, but once you or your kids make their own seasonal bookmarks, you’ll never misplace them. To craft them in just a few minutes, get colorful felt, Popsicle sticks and a glue gun. You can also opt for glue sticks for a more kid-friendly alternative.
Have your kids trace a leaf or draw a leaf design on the felt and cut it out. Glue each leaf onto a Popsicle stick and let dry. Have extra markers handy so each leaf can be decorated and names can be written on the back of the sticks.
Paper Cake Toppers
Holidays mean you’ll be doing a lot of baking in the near future, cakes included. Save money when it comes time to decorate those cakes by making your own toppers instead. Paper cake toppers can give any dessert an autumn theme, and they only take a few minutes to make.
Gather cardstock, toothpicks, paint and a brush. Cut the card stock into different-shaped leaves in a variety of colors. Paint and decorate however you like, and then glue them onto the toothpicks. When your cake is done, the decorations will be ready to go.
Decorating for autumn can be fun. You get to break out your favorite sweaters and get cozy while the leaves fall. It’s a gorgeous time of year, but it can’t be denied that buying decorations for the changing season every year adds up quickly.
To avoid spending more than you have to, make your own fall crafts this year so you home fits right in with the autumn season without breaking the bank. Little details like knit pumpkins or a fall mobile will make all the difference when you’re trying to bring autumn vibes into your home.

Great low cost ideas. Last year, I made the mistake of keeping newly gathered (i.e., not dry yet!) acorns in a covered jar; they got all musty! Lesson learned! I still love ironing beautiful leaves between 2 layers of wax paper to preserve them! I am making a bunch of cloth pumpkins (upcycled from $1 clothes from Goodwill) in a BUNCH of colors and prints from leopard spots to gold ribbing to the softest orange to ecru cables!
These crafts are so cute!! I love that fallen leaf mobile, will sure get one of these here!
