I absolutely love having a dedicated craft room, but even I have a hard time getting inspired in the mess. So I’m thrilled to have been able to create a beautiful workspace for myself as the first part of the #CraftRoomChallenge!!
The Craft Room Challenge is taking place over the month of January, with each week providing a specific goal in cleaning up your craft room. If you missed it last week, or don’t recall, here are the workspaces I started with in my office/craft room, and you can get all the details in last week’s post here:
In case you missed it, here was our teaser to the challenge!

First Task: Clear Your Workspace
Clearly my workspace needed some decluttering. Working from home on top of blogging my crafty life in what triples as our home office gets a bit overwhelming. Everything from bills to work papers to craft supplies explodes from my cabinets and drawers; more often than not things just get piled on my desk(s) until I get around to handling them/putting them away. Not only did I want to clear my workspace, but I wanted to make it brighter and more beautiful.
Here is my desk post clutter. (Well, post TOP clutter. Clearing out the little cubbies will come later.)
Now, to be fair, this desk had already gotten a makeover a year+ ago. (You can see how I updated my Ikea desk here.)
I still had a little remaining removable wallpaper from this desk makeover, and so I decided to brighten up the dark blue countertop of my computer desk builtin. (It came with the house.) You can see the original look here.
This remaining piece of wallpaper essentially serves as a desk blotter, but does a good job of brightening the dark workspace I was used to. Then I just had to organize my necessary tools so they wouldn’t be piling up everywhere.
A little wooden caddy (that I’m sure I’ll paint someday) served to store a lot of items for me. No, I’m not a narcissist, the mirror is in my office due to my having to work west coast hours in a midwest state. If I ever get to have date night with my husband, I frequently apply my makeup between phone calls in order to be ready on time! 😉
This is one of my favorite things on my desk. It’s a phone stand, but my 7yo lovingly enhanced it with this Valentine’s craft from two years ago.
Once the clutter was clear, it did give me a feeling of purpose. I also couldn’t STAND the blank space on my desk, glaring at me between my corner decorations. I needed to do something with that space, and I thought a nice motivation quote was just the ticket to create an inspirational, beautiful workspace going forward.
I hopped onto Picmonkey and got busy creating a quote to fit the space. I came up with two quotes and designs I liked, but couldn’t make up my mind between the two.
So I chose both.
I measured the space on my desk, then cut my created quote on my Cricut. I used two colors of vinyl. My office came with this pinkish color on the walls, and I’ve added black, white, and aqua accents over time. It seemed only fitting to add aqua and pink in quote for my black and white desk.
Using transfer tape, I first applied the blush quote to the desk, being careful to only adhere the words I wanted in that color. I slowly peeled back the tape, leaving the chosen words with which to work off of for my aqua vinyl. Also note by pretty boy Wrigley resting near me.
This simple addition of vinyl and design has absolutely given me a beautiful workspace.

Now, let’s take a look at their craft rooms and spaces!
I love the wallpaper on your desk top. Would love to know how it holds up to crafting. I have an Ikea tabletop and it will need some tlc soon.
I actually put in my other desk post how I gave it thx with paint prior to the wallpaper fix! The wallpaper has been nicely “wipeable” lol
What a wonderful idea Megan! I am daydreaming so often about owning one of them cutting machines and I bet that I’ll get myself one this year to make wonderful crafts like you did. Also, I like the idea of reusing wallpaper a lot! Thank you for this inspiration.
I typically try to add a non-machine version to my cutting machine crafts, but even I have to admit they are AWESOME and somethings cannot be duplicated as easily! Thanks for the compliment!
I love that wallpaper and I bought a Cameo a few months ago and can you believe I have not used it yet? I love your little piece of art you made.
It took me a while to start using my machines as well – they can be a bit overwhelming! I highly suggest Youtube for some great ideas, or searching Silhouette Cameo on the web! Have fun!!
You’re making great progress! Love the phone stand! Nothing like a craft from the kids to make you smile!
Thanks Michelle! It is seriously one of my favorite things in there!
