Creating a Pre-Tween Boy’s Bedroom

Designing a Pre Tween Boy's Bedroom

Designing a Pre Tween Boy's Bedroom

So I’m the bad mom. I forced my boys to share a bedroom from the moment my youngest was sprung free from the crib. My thoughts at the time were that you have ONE chance in life to bond like this. I’m nine years senior to my own baby brother, so that was not a thing. But I’ve seen siblings who bonded like mad because (well, probably just the 70s and 80s TBH) they got to grow up in close quarters. I knew we’d separate them at some point, but while we had the opportunity to let them whisper at night and share secrets and all that fun, we did it.

Then they got sick of each other.

Okay, I definitely knew this was going to happen. They are four years apart, clearly this was not a forever after situation. So when the time finally came, we decided to let each decide how their personality would reflect their new {separate} bedrooms.

**This post is sponsored by California Design Den, but all opinions remain my own.**

After having gone through CARS/Planes/Mickey/etc phases, we were done with themed bedrooms. (So many extra comforters….) Despite J’s insistence that he wanted a Fortnite room, we held firm that his new room could have *touches* of his current infatuation but it should be easily adaptable to the next one. Since we are Chicago Cubs fans, we agreed on a color scheme that wouldn’t age badly.  Gone are the Disney sheets and time for big boy sheets!

We ordered these sheets from California Design Den in Indigo Blue to contrast with his new red comforter. These sheets were perfect for his room and so silky soft! They are 100% cotton and feel like butter. Now, to be fair, J is usually okay with bedtime because he loves to read himself to sleep, but it does seem like he jumps in earlier now and snuggles up tight with his new bedding. Maybe he also enjoys the quiet of a room to himself a bit. He did used to complain that H was rather chatty at bedtime. . .

A little background on California Design Den: From luxe sateens to crisp percales, every set of their sheets is crafted using fine materials, superb craftsmanship, and eco-friendly production processes. You can shop their stock through retailers like Wayfair and Nordstrom Rack, and many of their sheets are best-sellers on Amazon; you can check out their storefront here.

The color was perfect, and I was maybe slightly jealous of how soft they felt when I made up his bed. I think a new set for Mom and Dad is in the future.

We still have some designing to do. (That huge wall is killing me.) However, Fortnite being his current passion is also not easily accessible.  We ordered the wall decal on Amazon, but there aren’t a ton of options available. I’ve searched high and low for posters and things, but its still pretty sparse on the pickings.

I won’t lie, I was a little sad to see him reject his old Bumblebee poster, CARS wall art, and Captain America canvas….but it is his room, not mine for memories of his former years. We’ve had a few transformations over the years, and its up to me to let him continue them. {Mommy sniffle}

So basically, here is how we transitioned from toddler shared room to pre-tween:

  1. Choose a color scheme to GROW with. No more themes they will outgrow in a year or two.

  2. Personalize with touches of their current obsessions. An aunt made this awesome personalized pillow, and then we added small sparks of his personality with figurines, toys, and wall decor.

  3. Make bedtime easier by making an inviting space with comfy sheets.

Did you ever have to share a room with a sibling?

Loved your ideas! My grands are your kids ages and it is interesting to see how they are allowed to develop their own rooms. I remember catching heck for making PINHOLES in my floral wallpapered walls to hang my beloved pictures of Paul McCartney up! I swore my kids would be able to have input into their rooms! My granddaughter got a queen-sized bed for Christmas so the beloved 125# dog can sleep with her and leave parents alone!

My boys shared rooms too and it is hard to let them have range of decorating…lol. I think it’s smart to use base colors with sprinkles of their current likes as it will definitely change as they grow.

I swore up and down that I would not be guilt-ed into anymore themed bedding!
