Welcome back to the second day of my Disneyland Party Series! Today I’m sharing with you the adorable Disney birthday outfit I made for H for his first birthday party.
I had originally searched Storenvy and Etsy for costumes, fearing I wouldn’t have the time or the patience to craft one of my own. However, while I found many adorable outfits, I was less willing to part with my money once all the other facets of the party began to add up. A DIY was definitely in order!
Off to the store!! I grabbed a simple white onese, some red pants, a Disney ribbon roll, Heat N Bond, and some fabric transfer printable paper.
This was completely thrown together on the fly. THAT’S how easy it can be if you just try it out!
First off, I measured the ribbon for a “suspenders” look on the onesie, and cut the length I needed. I cut an equal length of bonding material to fit under the ribbon.
With the bonding material beneath it, I applied my iron to secure the hold.
I tucked the ends of the ribbon under the flaps of the onesie and called that section done! The pants required very little work – I used a fabric cutter to make them into shorts! Well, long shorts, since I have a chubster; I didn’t want Mickey Mouse shorts that looked more like Daisy Dukes!
{In the interest of full disclosure, my wonderful cousin who actually owns a fabric cutter clipped the pants for me. You all know I shy away from fabric crafts usually. }
I wanted a nice large emblem for his first birthday, so I used Picmonkey create a #1 in a color pattern that reflected the theme. I’d bought this sweater pattern digital download years ago from an Etsy seller, and one of them was perfectly suited to my color scheme. I uploaded my design and printed it on my fabric transfer paper. I made the best use of the paper by printing two, in case I fudged up the first one.

Wow, my printer is dusty!! It hides in a cabinet in my craft room, I assume no responsibility for this!!! {That doesn’t stop me from cringing.}
NOTE: This paper worked for my party, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Halfway through the cake smash, it began peeling off his onesie. It was made two days prior, so it shouldn’t have done that. I’d use a different brand. Hopefully you can avoid the one I used from the photo above, because I didn’t save the name! 🙁
I hand trimmed and ironed on the cut out and created my very own birthday outfit!! {Well, not MY very own. It was for H, you silly-heads.}
It was one of H’s many costume changes for his big day, but I think he looked spectacular!!
Clearly, he did too. 🙂 Here come some more shameless pics of the birthday boy!!
Love that he retained his daddy’s beautiful blue eyes!!
We had to remove the fondant Mickey head from his “smash cake” {seriously!? My cousin made the cake for us, but I think she overestimated Henry’s appetite!!! Actually…yeah, she might not have. Either way, he wasn’t thrilled that we didn’t let him finish the whole thing}.
Hopefully this gives you some fun ideas for DIY Disney Birthday Outfits for your littles!! Be sure to check back tomorrow for the next post in my Disneyland Birthday Party Series!
Also, make sure you didn’t miss yesterday’s post, my DIY Invitations!
