I made this as a housewarming gift, but I sort of want to keep it. I love how my farmhouse sign turned out! #CraftyDestashChallenge

It’s the third Monday of the month, therefore it is time for the Craft Room De-stash Challenge!

My cousin sent me a photo a long time ago with this quote, and a few ideas about how she’d like me to create it for her. To be fair, I want to keep this for myself now, or at the very least I need to make another. I also am a “Mother of Sons”.

That’s probably the closest I’m getting to Daenerys.

I had two framed pieces from Hobby Lobby – one I used to make my wedding gift sign for one cousin, and the other became my housewarming gift for another. Having all the supplies on hand made it perfect for this month’s Craft Room De-stash challenge!

Every month, a group of bloggers challenge each other to create a new craft or project from their own stash of goodies! Check out some awesome creations you might be able to make from your own stash! #CraftRoomDestashChallenge

I grabbed these pictures largely for the frames – plus they were on clearance! Then of course they sat in my craft room for forever, until finally I had some good ideas for them. My cousin sent me the quote about a woman with all sons, as she and I both carry that title. She asked me if I could maker her a sign using it, and I agreed. She liked the idea of using greens and blues in the design, as well.

Supplies You Need to Make This Farmhouse Mother of Sons Sign

  • Canvas or frame to be painted
  • Painter’s Tape
  • Transfer Tape
  • Acrylic paint
  • White spray paint
  • Vinyl
  • Cutting Machine (I used my Cricut)

I started off simply taping out the frame, knowing I wanted to leave that part as is.

Then came the fun part – I grabbed several bottles of green and blue acrylic paint and just slathered it over the antlers picture. Once it dried, I had a nice, almost ombre-ish canvas of sea colors. I’d love to show you but I stupidly didn’t take any pictures!  I let it dry and started designing the quote.

If you’re a frequent reader of my blog (and by the way thank you for that!) then you know of my love affair with Picmonkey.  I opened up a transparent canvas and typed out the quote, alternating between two fonts.

Since I’m generous, you can download my design for your own canvas! 🙂 Please remember that all designs on C’mon Get Crafty are my own and available for personal use only.

Satisfied with my design, I opened my Cricut Design Space and imported the quote for cutting out on vinyl with my Cricut Explore Air.

Now, you could definitely cut out the quote in vinyl and lay it over the painted canvas and call it a day. I wanted a cleaner look than my big blue canvas, so I cut mine to use as a stencil. After weeding away the excess vinyl, I laid my transfer tape down and adhered it to lift the quote.

I positioned it on my canvas and gave it a strong rubbing with my bone folder. Then you peel back the transfer tape and the vinyl is adhered!

I made sure all of the frame edges were completely covered with painter’s tape, then took it out to the garage and covered the quote in white spray paint. When it was dry, I peeled the vinyl off to reveal the pretty sea colored quote!

Now the main problem is how much I want to keep it for myself!!

C’mon, it looks pretty darn great on my mantel, right?

I suppose since I already sent my cousin a picture of it I’m committed to parting with it. I might just have to run out to get another frame and redo it for myself!

Now check out the rest of this month’s projects!!

My daughter’s mother-in-law would love this. She has three handsome sons, three beautiful daughters-in-law and five sweet grandchildren (three in 2016…). Very pretty. I’m going to share this with my daughter. We’re sharing a Cricut and she has custody of it 🙂

Yep, it looks great on your mantel.
Guess you’ll have to “commision” a piece for yourself!
I’ve never used painters tape before.
Looks like I need some as it would probably be better than masking tape.
    Thanks for sharing.
