Wait, what did she say!?!
Anyone who knows me isn’t going to necessarily picture me going DIY on furniture, at least not in terms of actually building it. Refresh, repurpose, repaint? SOLD. Build from scratch?? Nope!
However, after attempting floating shelves and tackling a headboard that was more unique than anything I could find in stores, I’ve learned a thing or two about getting out of my comfort zone and creating something new. I’m not talking building chairs and tables and all that jazz, but I think simplistic options are totally attainable! (If nothing else, there’s a LOT of resources out there to give it a try!)
So let’s chat about some cool furniture projects you can totally handle on your own. At least, I think I can, which means you should be all good.
Floating Shelves
First off, floating shelves. They’re basically the kindergarten of DIY furniture projects – super simple and a ton of fun. All you need are some planks, brackets, screws, and a trusty level. This one I’ve actually done! Putting them together is a breeze, and dressing them up? Even better. Paint them, stain them, slap some stickers on them – make them scream “you.”
Plant Stand
Got a green thumb itching for a showcase? NOTE: I do not. I bet my mother would like it if I tried to make her one, though – her house is basically a greenhouse already.
For those who talk to their plants (because, let’s face it, they’re less drama than people), a DIY plant stand is your chance to try building yourself something functional for your space. It’s like creating a VIP section in your living room for your leafy friends. Make it tall, short, or somewhere in-between – like a reality TV show, but with more photosynthesis and less backstabbing.
You pick the height, the tiers, and the colors. It’s a small project with big impact – and yep, totally customizable. In true Crafty fashion, blogger Shara at Woodshop Diaries has a great tutorial for making your own tiered plant stand.
Nightstands and Side Tables
We’re creeping a bit into Megan’s uncomfortable and unknown area with this idea. Honestly, the thought of DIY-ing these essentials is pretty daunting. Yet, there’s this appealing side to it – the idea that by taking the plunge, you can tailor every aspect to your liking. From choosing the exact size that fits your space to selecting a style and color that screams “you,” the customization possibilities are endless. Are you leaning towards a rustic feel or a sleek, modern look? No matter which style you prefer, the essential tools to build a nightstand are relatively simple and accessible, making this project attainable for DIYers of all skill levels.
I’m planning to check out some of the different plans over at The Spruce Crafts if I ever warm up my cold feet to this project. There’s a really neat sliding barn door plan that’s tempting me!
