Glossy vs. Matte Paper: Which Is Better for Printing?

November 20, 2023July 28, 2025 Megan Post a comment
Woman choosing paper for drawing

Are you a paper snob like me? I happen to be a fan of very specific types of paper, but each crafty project really does require its own perfect paper choice to work out for the best!

Every crafty project has its own perfect paper match, and sometimes figuring out the difference between glossy and matte feels like a mini science experiment.

So, let’s break it down in plain English: what’s the difference in the glossy vs. matte paper match-up, and when should you use each?

I’ve got you.

Glossy paper has a shiny surface, while matte paper is non-reflective. Which is better for printing? I’ll lay out the differences between glossy and matte paper finishes to help you determine which is better for your next printing project.

Glossy Vs. Matte Paper: Which is Better for Printing?

What’s the Deal with Glossy Paper?

Glossy paper is like the diva of the paper world. Shiny, bold, and ready to make a statement.

Glossy paper is great for printing photos or images with vibrant colors because it offers high contrast and sharpness. One of the benefits of using glossy paper is that its reflective surface enhances the vividness of colors, making photos look more lively.

However, glossy paper is prone to collecting fingerprints and smudges, making it less durable than matte paper. I found that glossy paper tends to resist fading for longer than matte paper, but that can depend on the ink, printer, and paper I use. If you choose a low-quality glossy paper, it might turn yellow over time.

Why Use It:

  • Color POPS: Glossy finishes make colors more vibrant and saturated, great for printing high-res photos, art prints, or party décor.
  • Sharp Detail: If you want those lines and contrasts to be crystal-clear, glossy’s your best friend.
  • Eye-Catching Display: Perfect for framed prints, signage, or anything you want people to notice.

The Downsides:

  • Not Always Long-Lasting: Lower-quality glossy paper can yellow over time, especially with certain inkjet printers.
  • Smudge City: Fingerprints show up like nobody’s business.
  • Glare Issues: In bright light or near windows, glossy paper reflects everything.

When Matte Paper Wins

Matte paper is your go-to for a clean, classic, and glare-free finish. It’s the chill cousin in your paper family; no drama, just dependable and sturdy.

Matte paper has a smooth, non-reflective surface that provides a more natural look to photographs. I like it for printing images or text that requires no shine or glare.

Matte paper is less prone to accumulating fingerprints, and it’s known for its durability. Many people use matte paper to print documents, manuals, and portfolios that require a clean, readable format. Just keep in mind that matte paper does stain, but it doesn’t have the gloss-coated layer that makes fingerprints noticeable.

Why Use It:

  • Professional Look: Matte paper feels elevated, especially for portfolios, resumes, or wedding signage.
  • No Glare: Ideal for well-lit spaces or materials meant to be handled often.
  • Fingerprint-Resistant: Doesn’t scream “smudge” every time someone touches it.

Things to Note:

  • Texture Matters: Some matte finishes are smoother than others—test before you commit!
  • Colors Can Look Muted: Matte won’t give you the same color intensity as glossy.

Factors To Consider before Choosing

Still unsure which to pick? Ask yourself:

  • What am I printing? (Photos? Labels? Invitations?)
  • Where will it go? (Bright room? Dark hallway? A frame?)
  • How will it be used? (Displayed? Handled a lot? Given as a gift?)
  • What look am I going for? (Bold and glossy, or soft and subtle?)
  • What’s my budget? (Glossy usually costs more than matte.)

Project TypeBest Paper Finish
Photo PrintsGlossy
DIY Wall ArtEither (depends on lighting)
InvitationsMatte or Glossy (glossy for bold color, matte for text-heavy designs)
StickersMatte for writable surfaces, Glossy for waterproof or shine
PortfoliosMatte
Craft Room LabelsMatte

Here are some things to think about when deciding between the two:
⦁ Color Vibrancy: If you want the colors to pop, then go for glossy paper. If you prefer subdued, natural-looking images, choose matte paper.
⦁ Reflectivity: If you’re planning to print photos that will be in a space that gets direct sunlight, consider using matte paper. Conversely, if you want your photo to pop in a frame, then go with glossy paper.
⦁ Durability: If you’re worried about smudging, fingerprints, or water droplets, matte paper might be a better choice. Conversely, if longevity isn’t a concern and you’re focused on making a statement with your photos, then glossy paper is ideal.
⦁ Cost: Glossy paper is generally more expensive than matte paper, so if you’re on a tight budget, matte paper might be the better choice.
⦁ Size: Choosing the right size also plays a role – 8 x 10 inkjet paper is a common and versatile option for personal prints, photo projects, or framed displays.

So… Which One’s Better for Printing?

Honestly? It depends.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer here. Glossy is bold and vibrant; matte is classic and clean. The “best” choice comes down to the project, the purpose, and your personal style.

Whenever possible, test a small sample first, especially if you’re working with a new printer or trying a new ink/paper combo.

And if you’re a fellow paper snob (welcome to the club), you already know: there’s no such thing as too many options.

I tend to use a LOT of sticker paper as well in my crafty projects – check out my favorite craft papers below!
