We are big, BIG readers in the Crafty house. I grew up with my nose in a book, and my husband also loves to dig into a good novel series when he finds the time. He introduced me to both Harry Potter AND The Hunger Games, actually.

My boys love to read, and we amass a pretty decent collection of books. Being (almost) six and two, most of ours are board books or easy picture books, but now I’m so excited that J and I have started chapter books together!! So today I’m sharing not only a fun tutorial for making your own bookmarks, but also a great way to share the love of reading with your local charities, just by grocery shopping!

I am so excited about this awesome promotion, you guys! Whenever my family asks me what my kids need for birthdays or Christmas, books are always on the list. Now I have the ability to give books to other kids just by shopping for stuff I already buy?!  WINNER WINNER!!

Get this. . . For every purchase of a participating product at Walmart, you get a point good for one free Scholastic Book. The offer runs from June 29th through September 30th (perfect for the start of the school year!) and you can claim up to NINETY books!!!

Be still my reader’s heart.

You can choose to keep the books for yourself (and your little readers), or donate them to charities of your choice!  And it’s all great products that are participating, so don’t worry that you’ll have to buy some bizarre off brand anything to join in. The products include Coca-Cola, Kellogg’s, HERSHEY’S, and The J.M. Smucker Company.

Get the full list of participating products here.

Go here to join in the fun and claim your points!

I intend to let J and H each get one book for themselves from our points, and we will donate the rest to local shelters. Everyone should have access to the beauty of books.

To help J get amped up about all the reading goodness on its way, we decided to work on a new craft! J loves the Pete the Cat book series, so we decided to turn Pete into a bookmark for all the chapter books we intend to read!

I found some great coloring book pages for free by searching Google – check these out!  I simply saved the images and printed them out at 3.5 x 5 sizes on white card stock. Make sure not to use regular paper, it isn’t sturdy enough for a bookmark.

Now color!!

Time for the grown up to cut out Pete!

You could easily cut a little higher up on his legs to make him sit lower on the book as well.

So now you have a fun afternoon craft project and incentive to go shopping! What are you waiting for!?

Grab these awesome products at Walmart and start earning some points!

CGC Scholastic 13

We snagged ours and settled down to read some old favorites while we wait for our new books to arrive!

And don’t forget to make your bookmark! You could use any character you wanted, there are tons of free coloring pages available online.
