On the last Monday of each month, I challenge a group of bloggers to participate in a #MovieMondayChallenge! We decide on a topic, genre, or specific movie to use for inspiration and everyone gets free reign to create something wonderful!

This month we elected to go with school themed films. Last month everyone was tasked with the same movie: JAWS. There were some awesome creations – find mine here! Prior to that, we all go to pick our own wedding themed movie to use as inspiration. This month we got to choose our own film again!

My first and only choice was a SUPREME FAVE of mine : 10 Things I Hate About You!

Omigosh you guys, I seriously regress to teenage geek out when I watch this. You know I speak fluent movie quotes, and this film is CRAZY QUOTABLE!  Being a former actress and confirmed theatre nerd, the fact that this film is based off of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew is even MORE fun! I actually also included this film years ago in my post about my favorite movie soundtracks. However, I stupidly left it out of my post about best teen films! Oops!

In case you’ve never experienced the deliciousness that is this film, here is the summary from IMDB:

“…10 Things I Hate About You starts off with Cameron, new student at Padua High, sitting in the office of the quirky guidance counselor Ms. Perky. He is then shown around the school by Michael, who will become his best friend. During his tour is when Cameron first sees Bianca Stratford, a beautiful sophomore with one problem: she isn’t allowed to date. And neither is her “shrew” sister, Katarina, a senior who loves indie rock and feminist prose and hates conformity. But Kat and Bianca’s father alters his house rule: now, Bianca can date… as long as Kat has a date, too. Now, in order for Cameron to date Bianca, he has to find someone to date Kat. So Michael helps him enlist the help of pretty-boy/jerk/model Joey Donner, tricking him into thinking that *he* will get to take Bianca out if he pays someone to take out Kat. His choice: Patrick Verona, a bad-boy with a mysterious reputation–some say he ate a live duck once, others that he lit a state trooper on fire, and even more claim that he had a brief porn career. Will Patrick win Kat’s heart? Will Cameron win Bianca’s? Or will everything hit the fan…?

The cast list also rocks – Heath Ledger in his first Hollywood break, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Leavitt…. Not to mention some awesome supporting roles OWNED by Allison Janney, David Krumholtz, and Larry Miller!

Ok, that’s my sales pitch for the movie, so on to the craft! The film opens at the school, and we are introduced to pretty much all the main characters and their respective personalities. At the end of the day, as Bianca and her best friend Chastity are walking out and pondering life.

Chastity: I know you can be overwhelmed….and you can be underwhelmed. . . but can you ever just be “whelmed”?
Bianca: (thinking it over) I think you can in Europe!

There are many many brilliant quotes from this film, but this one seemed to speak to me for this project. I’ve wanted to try a DIY Sharpie mug for a while, seeing how many pretty ones other people have created, and the quote was perfect!

Rather than run out for a blank ceramic mug, I grabbed one from our collection that has designs but no words. I also loved getting to try out my hand-lettering on this project!

I opened up Picmonkey to get an idea of how to write the text on the mug. I utilized one of Picmonkey’s fonts, Coffee Break.

I kept this up on my computer screen and practiced the word several times on a notepad before attempting my mug. I used my Sharpie brush markers for the first time too!! After three or four attempts on paper, I hitched on my big girl panties and went for the real deal.

In order to keep it straight, I used the little blocks as a grid line. Check it out below.

Of course I added a hashtag! I also added the squiggly arrows as a nod to “overwhelmed” and “underwhelmed”.  Once finished with your design, pop the mug onto a baking sheet and stick it in a cold oven. It’s important that the oven be COLD! If the mug heats up too quickly, it can shatter, and your beautiful design is gone! (Full credit to all the DIY Sharpie Mug posts already out there, since I would NOT have known that!)

Set a time for 30 min as soon as you hit the preheat to 350, and shut the oven off when the timer sounds. Leave the mug to cool in the oven on its own, overnight if possible. Then you’re set!

I’m sure I have plenty of coffee drinking mornings to be “whelmed” with my DIY Sharpie mug. 🙂

You did a great job on your lettering! I know it can be especially daunting with Sharpies, lol. Love that movie, too!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen this movie? Although, I’m really bad at remembering movies…lol. Fun way to remember the movie. You’ll be reminded every time you drink coffee.
