You guys, I can’t believe this – today, my baby boy H turned one!! How quickly a year has flown!
I have two beautiful boys, and I am so thankful for the joy they bring me! I’m currently going spectacularly overboard on his first birthday party plans, which is this Saturday. I can’t wait to share all the party details with you all! Be looking for my WEEK LONG series on this awesome party!! 🙂
In honor of his birthday, I figured I’d finally share with you the orange & teal nursery reveal – you know, a year later!
{Some of us take procrastination to a whole new level.}

I don’t quite recall what made me decide to go with this color combo for the nursery, but I’m so glad I did. H’s nursery is one of my favorite rooms in the house – so bright and cheerful! For context, this is what the room looked like when we bought the house {former owner furniture setup}:
While we were house hunting, we referred to this one as “The Brian House” because of the Brian Griffin dog on the bed. 🙂 My dear family friend and realtor gifted us with our own stuffed Brian on his first visit after we bought the house. 🙂
The room was already a nice light blue, and I certainly didn’t want to have to paint more than absolutely necessary. I really just wanted a feature wall to add a punch of color. I had already made over the baby dresser, and managed to snag a dark blue rocker chair on a great sale. Those plus J’s old crib and dresser/changing table were the perfect amount of furniture for the room.
What do you think? 😉 I had the devil’s own time measuring out and spacing those teal lines (painted in the same paint as the dresser for a perfect match!). I actually had a contractor working on our foyer at the time, and he very thoughtfully marked off the correct measurements for me after I’d done it wrong – twice.
I don’t math.
I bought the hat rack at Hobby Lobby (like a lot of stuff in this room), and painted it a distressed version of the teal. I love having H’s Birthday Blocks sitting right there on the dresser. Three guesses as to how long ago I took this picture.
The hat on the bear is actually H’s. 🙂 He grew out of it pretty quickly.
A little Cubs representation!! The Beatrix Potter book is actually mine from childhood. I mostly love the canvas – I took a plain canvas from Michaels and did a hand print overlap of my husband, my eldest, and the baby, in three different shades of blue acrylic paint. Simple, but it makes me smile every time I see it.
We’d hung some plain open shelves above the changing table dresser for added function and decor. Note below, you can see my DIY Nursery Art sitting on top!
See the changing pad cover? Isn’t it the CUTEST? I sort of ended up not only with a color scheme, but an elephants motif.
I carried the elephant theme over with some more DIY nursery art, this time Disney style. Elephants equal Dumbo, right? 😉
Obviously, I did not realize early enough how difficult to read the orange one would be. These were originally ugly matching canvas art I got on clearance at Hobby Lobby, which I covered in fabric I’d bought to make the crib bumpers. I used a combination of wooden letters and vinyl to apply the lyrics to “Baby Mine” from Dumbo. I traced the silhouettes of baby Dumbo on my – well, my Silhouette – and cut them on vinyl.
The massive blanket is the “baby blanket” my mother made for H. It ended up being more afghan sized than baby sized, lol.
I love the wooden letters above his crib. I bought these at Hobby Lobby, and painted them with my ever-useful Java Gel Stain. I adhered them to the wall with Command Strips so I wouldn’t have to mess with nails or holes in the wall.
And yes, you read that right above – I wanted to MAKE my crib bumpers. Loyal readers, don’t die of shock. I did not learn to sew for this. Like any good crafty girl with too many projects and a sad lack of sewing skills, I hired out – in this case, to my cousin who does have these skills. 🙂 The bumper pads I ordered online came with instructions, so I just chose fabric and sent her on her way! She did a fantastic job, obviously. I love the two-sided effect of the bumpers, and I made a No Sew Crib Skirt out of a pretty grey polka dot to complete the look. {The crib sheet I bought, but it matches beautifully, doesn’t it!?}
Oh I nearly forgot the rug! I got that online, and I am IN LOVE with it! A rug over carpet may be a strange decorating idea {or maybe not, I have no idea honestly} but I think the room would feel unfinished without it. And it worked as a great backdrop for monthly Birthday Blocks photos!
