Because wearing green doesn’t have to mean digging out that itchy old sweater from the back of your closet.

So, this post isn’t exactly timely — I made this shirt for St. Patrick’s Day a while back, but hey, good ideas don’t expire, right? Whether you’re prepping for next March or just want a fun way to customize shirts year-round, this project is simple, fun, and perfect for beginners.
All you need is a blank shirt, some fabric paint, and your trusty Silhouette machine — plus a little patience and maybe a snack break during that pesky drying time.
Supplies You’ll Need:
- Silhouette Cameo (or other cutting machine)
- Blank T-shirt or tank (I grabbed mine from Target)
- Clear vinyl for the stencil
- Fabric paint (I used white, but you do you!)
- Sponge brush (for that satisfying paint dabbing moment)
- Weeding tool (optional but makes life easier)
- Iron or heat press (if you want to set the design for long-term wear)
Step 1: Choose Your Design
The hardest part? Picking a design! Seriously, I spent way too long scrolling through my Silhouette library before finally deciding on a festive St. Paddy’s Day-inspired design.
Mine was a fun shamrock-inspired design, but honestly, you can take this technique and run with it — summer slogans, holiday designs, or something funny for your next family reunion.

Step 2: Cut Your Design on Vinyl
Once I settled on my design, I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut it out on clear vinyl. The vinyl acts as a stencil here, so no need for permanent adhesive vinyl — just something that’ll temporarily stick to your shirt.
💡 Pro Tip: If your design has lots of small details, use a weeding tool to help clean up the cut edges. It’s worth the extra effort.

Step 3: Paint Your Shirt
Now for the fun (and slightly messy) part — painting!
- Lay your shirt flat and place a piece of cardboard inside to prevent the paint from bleeding through.
- Carefully position your vinyl stencil on the shirt and press it down firmly.
- Using a sponge brush, gently dab the fabric paint over your design. Don’t swipe or drag the paint — blotting helps keep the edges clean.
I used white fabric paint on a green tank top for that crisp contrast, but you can get creative with your color combos.
💡 Pro Tip: Less paint is better than too much. You can always add a second coat, but fixing paint bleed? Not so fun.
Step 4: Let It Dry & Wear the SH%T out of it 😉
Once you’ve finished painting, step back and resist the urge to peel the vinyl immediately (trust me, I know the temptation). Give the paint plenty of time to dry — I recommend at least a few hours or overnight if you can.
When dry, carefully peel off the vinyl to reveal your awesome design.

Step 5: Set the Design for Long-Term Wear
If you want your design to last through countless washes, I recommend heat-setting it with an iron or heat press.
✔️ Place a clean cloth or parchment paper over your design.
✔️ Gently press your iron (on medium heat) over the design for 3–5 minutes.
✔️ No steam needed — just firm, even pressure.
This step helps the paint bond to the fabric and keeps your shirt looking fresh longer.
Step 6: Show Off Your Masterpiece
And that’s it! You’ve got yourself a custom St. Patrick’s Day shirt — or whatever design you chose.
I wore mine to our St. Paddy’s festivities, but thanks to my corned beef-induced food coma, I totally forgot to snap a picture. (Rookie move.)
But hey — the good news is I did wear it, and I had an absolute blast making it. Plus, now I’ve got a fun green tank to break out whenever the mood strikes (or whenever I forget to do laundry and need a clean shirt).
I’m wearing the shirt here, you just can’t tell. 😁
