Wild Things Birthday Party Theme and Free Printables

“Where the Wild Things Are” is a childhood classic, and I had so much fun creating these framed prints for my cousin’s Wild Things birthday party!

Every month I challenge a group of bloggers to create a new craft or project from their own stash of goodies! The only rules are that you must use primarily your own craft stash to create a new project, with a $10 budget for necessities (aka, paint brushes, etc.).

 

This month I had an excellent craft to create from my stash – my cousin’s youngest son was celebrating his first birthday! She asked if I could create some artwork she could use for the party, and hang in his room afterwards.

I still had two of these shadowbox frames (I used two for my Avengers handprint art project), so I figured they would be perfect for my Wild Things artwork.

For this project, I googled for Wild Things silhouettes. I looked for outlines of the characters and images I could use to make some silhouette prints. Once I’d found some images to use, I converted them to silhouette png images using Photoshop. Then I uploaded one to Picmonkey to create my letters.

I used a silhouette and the Pencil Pete font available in Picmonkey to design the quote my cousin had requested. She had sent photo she’d found as inspiration, but I sadly couldn’t find the source to credit for it. So I tried my best to recreate it. After I’d designed it, I removed the background in Photoshop so that I could cut it on my Cricut.

So I was in a bit of a rush (per usual) creating these the day of the party. That means I neglected to take photos of the entire process. Suffice it to say, when I created my png image, I stupidly forgot to make the letters inside the silhouette transparent as well as the background in Photoshop. Therefore, when I uploaded the image to Cricut, I could only cut the silhouette – my quote was gone! I didn’t have time to redo it, so I simply cut the Wild Things silhouette on black vinyl and went old school – hand lettering.

I’m actually quite happy with how it turned out, considering I was frantically racing to finish. I should trust my old school art skills more often!

I also created another design per my cousin’s request, one with the quote “King of all Wild Things”.  I don’t recall the font I used on this one, so sorry about that. Once again I made it a transparent background and cut it on black vinyl.

The pictures were a great addition to the already beautiful mantel my cousin had decorated. (Oh, that? Just my cousin’s Emmy for lighting direction on Oprah. NBD.)

With little effort, she pulled off a pretty cool Wild Things party for her youngest. Wild Things cookies and cake made an appearance!

And of course there was the stylish birthday boy himself!
