Are you enjoying your Sunday? It has taken me forever to type up this post because I’m so exhausted. Yesterday we hosted our youngest’s first birthday party, and it was a smashing success! For today, I just wanted to share an older project. Back when we were living with my mom during out house hunt, she let me flex my crafty design muscles on her house. One of her requests was to create a gallery wall down her narrow hallway. (Her house is a ranch, built in the sixties.)
I neglected to take before shots, but I wanted to share some of the gallery wall ideas I came up with!

1. MIX UP SOME COLOR
Mix up your frame styles and colors. For the DIY cheap, paint old wooden frames! My mom had a ton of old frames with outdated oak, so I just added some color!
2. FRAME A LETTER
I loved this idea! My mom wanted the gallery wall to be composed primarily of old photos of our family across a few generations. I spent a good deal of time editing the images she scanned from scrapbooks and letting her select her favorites. Since the wall was ending up as a history of the our family, I wanted to portray our last initial in a crafty way. I painted a wooden letter “B” black, and an 8 x 10 picture frame maroon. I wrapped the glass of the frame in an old script scrapbook paper, and glued the letter to the top. Simple and quick!
3. FRAME A WORD.
In keeping with the ancestry angle, I opted for “heritage”. I cut the word in card stock and laid it over scrapbook paper before framing.
4. WRITE ON THE WALL.
Ok, not literally. But vinyl can be put to great use! You can use store-bought decals, or create your own! I cut this one out to go on the side of the hallway where Mom wanted to put all the photos of her grandson (at the time, there was only one!)
5. FRAME SOMETHING BESIDES PICTURES
Similar to the letter idea, I wanted to add more texture and color to the walls, since they were primarily composed of black and white photos. I decided on more vinyl and my mom loved this phrase. An open wooden frame from the craft store, and it was a done deal.
The adorable baby in the yellow sleeper and the girl with the bowl cut are both me. 🙂
