As I mentioned in my post about giving my son the Cars themed room of his dreams, one of my favorite things we did was give him a little book nook!
My husband and I both love to read, and love reading with J. He has a LOT of books, and our cube storage shelving isn’t even enough to hold them all. I’m sure a lot of you have seen the same pin that I have on Pinterest, about using Ikea spice racks for book shelving. I honestly think it was one of the first things I ever pinned, and I kept the idea in the back of my head forever.
So I went to Ikea and got in my day’s cardio searching the whole place TWICE for these spice rack shelves:
When I finally found them, I was dismayed by how small they were! Sure, they’re only $4, but I’d need twice as many as I’d thought for the space I wanted to fill.
I had already found and grabbed these picture rails to create my planned toy car storage for J, and I decided to just grab more and extend them over for the book nook.
They only come in black and white, but I wanted to keep a color scheme going, so out came the spray paint! For these, I used about four coats of Rustoleum in Gloss Apple Red , followed by two coats of Krylon Clear Acrylic.
I let the hubs chip in and do the hanging for me. I’m pretty handy with a hammer and nail, but his drill kinda scares me.
I played around with a few ideas for above the shelves – hanging letters or doing a vinyl quote from a book or something. Naturally, I went to my Cricut!
These are cuts from Cricut’s Classic Bookmarks digital cartridge, which only cost me $7.49 to download during one of their sales! There are six bookmarks, and I chose the three that were children’s books; Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and Treasure Island.
I cut the images on plain old card stock and used skor tape to hang them on the wall!
Since J still had books to store after the shelves were full, we used his cute little Cars baskets and a little floorspace.
I am in love with his new little book nook!!
