I don’t really know any crafty people who aren’t on a lifelong quest to make dollar store purchases into something people will say, “Wow, how perfect! You MADE that!?” about. I’m similarly diseased.
My best friend has two little girls, so they are always great guinea pigs for my Frankenstein Craft Monsters. When her second little girl was born last year, her firstborn got her own big-girl bedroom, decorated in pink and black, so I decided to work on a pretty picture to hang in there.
A few of my supplies for the project |
For this project, I dove into my “treasure chest” — a fancy name for the guest room closet that I stuff to the brim with old boxes, bottles, jars, leftover scraps from other projects, you name it — and pulled out a few items I’d tucked away. In this case, they included:
*the back wood matte to an old broken picture frame
*a wooden frame I’d spray painted a sparkly black for a different project, then ended up not using
*a pink polka-dot foam picture frame I’d bought at the dollar store for who-knows-why
*pretty pink scrapbook paper (not pictured)
The nice part about the broken picture back was it already had the clips in place to hang the project once it was finished! Using the ever-popular Modge Podge and my pretty paper, I updated the matte for a pretty finish. In this case, I used a smooth, pearlized metallic paper from Paper Stacks Luxury Stack. I chose a cute photo of the sisters to use that also fit the color scheme, and adhered it to the paper, finishing with the foam frame. I placed the black frame around that. Here’s how it ended up:
Not bad, but I felt it lacked a “finished” feel to it.
So I dug around in the treasure chest again and came up with another dollar store picture frame, in a brown plastic. I spray painted it black and insert my creation. Now I felt it looked complete. 🙂
If I strain my memory for the original price of all the pieces, I’d say this finished product cost a grand total of $8.
Luckily, my BFF loved it. She actually requested more art for the girls as their Christmas gifts. Find those pieces here!
