Whenever March rolls around, it means it’s time to lean into my Irish roots, blast The Boondock Saints soundtrack, and rewatch The Quiet Man for the hundredth time. 🍀
(Btw, if you’re a fan of The Boondock Saints movie, I did see this pretty cool gift idea on Amazon….)
As much as I love all the traditional Irish food, music, and movies this time of year, I also love easy DIY decor—especially when it’s cheap. (You may have noticed this from my Christmas and Halloween wreath projects…) And nothing beats the dollar store for budget-friendly holiday crafts.
This year’s Dollar Store St. Patrick’s Day Wreath came together in no time, and I’ll show you exactly how to make your own.
What You’ll Need:
- A charger plate – I found mine at Michaels for $1 (Dollar Store sometimes has them, too!).
- Shamrocks & gold coins – Scored at the Dollar Store.
- A wooden heart – Leftover from a project I never finished.
- Cardstock letters – You can cut these by hand or use a cutting machine.
- A leprechaun hat cutout – More on that below.
- Scarves or ribbon for hanging – Yes, the Dollar Store even had cute St. Paddy’s scarves!

How to Make It:
Step 1: Create Your Base
I love using charger plates for wreaths instead of traditional foam or wire forms. They’re sturdy, easy to glue onto, and cheap (we love cheap).
If you want a different shape, you could also cut a circle from cardboard or grab a wooden wreath form from a craft store.
Step 2: Add Shamrocks & Gold Coins
This step is basically “glue everything on and don’t overthink it.” I layered the shamrocks and gold coins all over the charger using a glue gun, covering as much of the surface as possible.
Pro tip: Layer your shamrocks at different angles to create dimension. Flat = boring.
Step 3: Make a DIY Leprechaun Hat
Now, this is where I got a little fancy (but not too fancy, because let’s be real—this is a Dollar Store craft).
I pulled out my trusty Cricut and used the Mad Hatter’s hat from the Disney collection as a base. I cut it from cardboard and green cardstock, then colored the edges with a gold paint marker.
No Cricut? No problem!
✔ Draw a simple leprechaun hat shape on cardstock.
✔ Cut it out and glue a black strip across the bottom.
✔ Add a gold buckle using paint, paper, or even a sticker.

Step 4: Attach the Wooden Heart & Letters
The heart was from an old project I abandoned (story of my craft room). I liked the pop of bright red in the midst of all the green and gold, and it highlights a shamrock quite nicely!
I went with ERIN GO BRAGH for my wording, but you could switch it up with:
- IRISH
- SLÁINTE (for my fellow Guinness-loving friends)
- CÉAD MÍLE FÁILTE (if you want to get real traditional)
Glue everything in place, making sure it’s balanced and not too heavy on one side.
Step 5: Add a Hanging Ribbon (Or a Scarf!)
This might be my favorite part—I found shamrock printed scarves at the Dollar Store and used them instead of ribbon to hang my wreath.
They were so cute that I almost didn’t want to use them, but I love how they look in place of a typical wreath hanger.
Alternative Hanging Ideas:
✔ Twine or rope for a rustic look
✔ A thick satin ribbon in gold or green
✔ A chain link for a vintage vibe

The Finished Wreath
And that’s it! In about 30 minutes (minus a few glue gun burns), I had a super festive St. Patrick’s Day wreath that cost me less than $10.
I love that I can switch up the design every year without spending a fortune—and that’s exactly why I’ll be making another one next March.
