Some of you may recall the supreme excitement of J {and, let’s face it, me too!} when we went to see Inside Out in the movie theaters. I’m just a grown up Disney kid, and J is growing up the same way. You just can’t beat Disney!
Well, after falling in love with the film in the theater, we naturally couldn’t wait to snatch up the Blu-ray/DVD as soon as it was released!! {Psst, that was Nov. 3rd, so you can go grab it now if you haven’t!}
As a special surprise, I ran to Target to pick up the movie without J knowing. We had plans to baby-sit for our friends’ littles last weekend, and they have a pretty sweet theater room in their basement. What better baby-sitting plan than a fun movie night!?
Well, I could think of something better. I thought it would be fun to let the kids play around with the film a little by letting them dress up as the characters! Both our friends’ kids and ours are big into dress up play, so I knew it would be a hit. All I needed was a plan!
How to Create Inside Out Character Masks
While at Target picking up the movie, I also picked up some paper plates. I thought a simple mask craft would be a fun addition to our movie night plans.
Now, I did make these masks myself, since our littles are pretty much too little to have helped much. But older kids would certainly be able do this themselves, or color in the designs!
Take a Sharpie and draw the character face on the back of the plate.
Even if you think you can’t draw, you can’t really fail at this. You’re not recreating the animation, just a general idea of the face of each character. I recommend doing exactly what I did – Google it. Just search for images of each character, and copy the basics of their eyes/mouth/hair onto the plate. For Sadness, I used a can lid to trace her glasses.
Color In Your Masks
This is where older kids could have a blast. Technically, my son and his friends probably could have handled this part . . . but our friends’ kids are not known for being particularly trustworthy with markers/crayons/paint/anything of the sort. So I may have simply gone the path of least resistance by not letting them do this either. #Mommychickenedout
You could easily use marker, crayon, or paint. I used paint for the vibrant colors. (And since only adult hands were going near it!)

Enjoy Mask Fun!
Once the masks had dried, we got our movie night on!! The kids were SO excited by these simple paper plate masks, you’d think I’d bought some wondrous plastic ones from the store!
Time to get our model and movie on!
Notice that J has his Anger toy he got the day we saw the film in theaters!! Anger was pretty popular, we had to make certain whomever had the Anger mask didn’t also have the Anger plush. A lot of sharing had to come in to play here.
I personally like the way Sadness’ mask turned out best. 🙂
Anger, of course. Should I be concerned he was everyone’s favorite!!?? I guess he’s just pretty funny. 🙂
Another fun one. 🙂 The kids had a blast, and we ended up watching the movie AGAIN the next day! Definitely a hit.
If you haven’t grabbed your copy yet, you can find it at Target:
Even better, when you buy the Inside Out DVDs and Blu-Rays at Target, you get 20 minutes of exclusive bonus content and deleted scenes. We had almost as much fun watching the extras as the movie!
Have you seen Inside Out yet? Who is your favorite character?
