Ribbon Angel Ornament DIY and Ornament Exchange

November 15, 2018March 8, 2024 Megan 16 comments
For this year's 2018 Ornament Exchange, I was paired up with a fellow blogger who is all about fabric crafts and annual angel tutorials. So I tried my hand at a DIY Ribbon angel ornament #ornamentexchange2018 #diy #christmas

Consider gifting something handcrafted and unique this Christmas – like this easy-peasy Ribbon Angel Ornament DIY, pretty, sweet, simple!

For this year's 2018 Ornament Exchange, I was paired up with a fellow blogger who is all about fabric crafts and annual angel tutorials. So I tried my hand at a DIY Ribbon angel ornament #ornamentexchange2018 #diy #christmas

It’s the time of year again for the ornament exchange!

I truly enjoy this challenge, it is just so nice to exchange crafty fun with like-minded strangers! This year I was partnered with Sue at Super Mom No Cape.
2018 Ornament Exchange - DIY Ribbon Angel Tutorial
Sue professed to be a fan of sewing, quilting, and other fabric-leaning crafty hobbies. I am TERRIBLE at fabric crafts. I can basically sew a button, but my costuming classes from college left little imprint on my brain about how to even work a sewing machine. I once made a backpack, but I’m pretty sure I’d screw up a quilt square today. I was at a loss!!

I suddenly recalled my amazing hoard – um, stash of Christmas ribbon and thanks to a little Youtube  tutorial by HappyBird’s Glittered Nest, I figured I could mix my partner’s fabric affection with her love of a new angel ornament annually. Now, the photos are all of the FIRST ribbon ornament I made, but I went with my second attempt to actually send to my partner. I just feel like the second attempt was better.

I don’t want to take ANY credit for this ornament DIY tutorial, since I followed HappyBird’s plan to a T, but here are a few pics of my progress. Definitely check her out!

Measuring the ribbon helped to create the right size angel. On my second attempt, I went a bit longer for a fuller dress.

Tried my hand at forming an angel ribbon ornament and found out it is quite easy to do! Perfect as a gift, or to decorate your tree!

Won’t lie, never expected to use staples in crafting!! This took a few tries to nail down the right spot.

I was VERY happy with our final “Skirt” product. Suddenly I am imagining all of the various princess style ornaments I could create like this!

Once you’ve created the skirt, you create the top of the dress in a similar fashion, though it is stapled in the center for the “wings” or “sleeves”, however you look at it.

Again, HappyBird’s Glittered Nest walks you through it exactly. Hot glue to two halves together and add a small round ornament for the head. Glue a ribbon to the back and you’ve got an angel ornament!

When all was said and done, my red angel turned out just fine. However, I decided to try again, just to see if I could make it a little bigger, and my blue angel ended up being the perfect gift for my exchange partner!
I can’t wait to see what she created for MY tree!

I’ve always wondered how they made those little angels but I never actually thought to look up a tutorial. Yours came out great! Pinned.

The angels are so pretty. It is a great way to use the pretty ribbon we all seem to collect.

Your angel ornament turned out so pretty! I totally do a “test run” first before making one to gift; I want to be sure I do it the right way!

I am always looking for pretty ornaments that LOOK hard to make for my church’s Christmas bazaar. I really liked yours; I bet I have MORE ribbon that you do. How can you NOT buy more when it is 75-90% off? LOL!
